Senior Stars Bet on New-Age Directors: Chiranjeevi, Nandamuri Balakrishna and Nagarjuna Akkineni Take a Fresh Route
A noticeable trend is emerging in the Telugu film industry, where senior stars are increasingly collaborating with young and upcoming directors for their next projects. Leading this shift are veterans like Chiranjeevi, Nandamuri Balakrishna, and Nagarjuna Akkineni, all of whom are exploring fresh combinations to reinvent their on-screen image.
After the blockbuster success of Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu with Anil Ravipudi, Chiranjeevi is currently in a transitional phase. His immediate next project is with director Bobby Kolli, where he will be seen in an action-packed role as a mafia don. Priyamani is set to play the female lead, while there are ongoing speculations about key roles involving younger actresses like Anaswara Rajan and Krithi Shetty, though nothing has been finalized yet. S. Thaman is composing the background score for the film.

Looking ahead, Chiranjeevi is also set to collaborate with young filmmaker Srikanth Odela for another action entertainer. Srikanth is currently busy with The Paradise, starring Nani. Although the film was initially slated for an August 21 release, there are reports suggesting a possible postponement. Additionally, Chiranjeevi is said to be in early story discussions with debutant director Srinnivas Rangoli, indicating his willingness to explore new talent.
Meanwhile, Nandamuri Balakrishna is currently shooting for a film with Gopichand Malineni. Initially conceived as a sci-fi mythological film, the project has now been reworked into a mass action entertainer due to various constraints. Nayanthara plays the female lead in this film.

Balakrishna is also lining up an interesting project with young director Vivek Athreya, which will be produced by Mythri Movie Makers. In another development, reports suggest that he will collaborate with Vijay Kanakamedala under the banner of SLV Cinemas. Earlier, there were plans for a film with Harish Shankar, but following the outcome of Ustaad Bhagat Singh, those plans have reportedly been put on hold, paving the way for newer talent to step in.
On the other hand, Nagarjuna Akkineni is taking a significant risk by entrusting his milestone 100th film to young director Ra Karthik. Tentatively referred to as King 100, the film is progressing quietly. The project features multiple female leads, with Tabu and Aishwarya Rajesh already on board.
This growing trend of senior stars collaborating with emerging filmmakers reflects a strategic shift in Tollywood. By blending experience with fresh storytelling perspectives, these actors are not only reinventing themselves but also opening doors for the next generation of directors.
